About KLES and JNMC

The KLE Society has its headquarters at Belgaum (Karnataka). The roots of this society can be traced back to year 1916 when seven selfless dedicated teachers (fondly known as Saptarishis) and three patrons (Founders) identified the immense need to create a strong educational base in the neglected areas of North Karnataka & South Maharashtra, and thus KLE Society was born. Set upon a rare philosophy & fundamental principles of imparting quality education to the needy and the poor, the society has grown tremendously in last nine decades. The early years ensured basic literacy to the sons of the soil; the next phase was devoted for nurturing higher education, both professional & conventional. The present leadership under Dr. Prabhakar Kore MP (Rajya Sabha), adopted the plan and strategy in consonance with changing times. Modern approaches are adopted and scientific methods have been employed. The result is that a small kingdom of 38 educational institutions in 1984 has expanded into an empire of 239 institutions, in education and health care, breathing in and out, quality and excellence of international standards. The growth and development of this educational organization is mainly attributed to the philanthropic contributions of thousands of donors. Prominent among them are Smt. Sudha Murthy, our alumna and Chairman Infosys, Bangalore, Dr. Gururaj Deshpande, Founder President of Sycomor Networks, Boston, USA and Smt. Jayashree Deshpande.
KLE Society which is now 98 years old has been recognized by many as World – Class – Educational - Organization in building a new India by creating “Urban amenities in Rural areas”.
The major contribution of the KLE Society in Education has been the establishment of the J N Medical College. The extreme shortage of medical facilities in the region, promoted the KLE Society to establish he Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College at Belgaum in 1963. The College stands testimony to the high professional standards aimed for and achieved by the KLE Society. The sprawling 100 acres campus has excellent infrastructure, with state-of-the art museums, laboratories, equipments, as well as other facilities that collectively provide a professional environment.
The high standards maintained by the College have attracted students from all over the world. Several collaborations with ICMR, WHO, University of Illinois, Chicago, USA, University of Missouri, Kansas City, USA, for teaching and research, have vastly enhanced the reputation of the College. Under the aegis of NICHD and the NIH (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the National Institutes of Health, USA) an academic collaboration was established to develop “Global Network for Women’s and Children’s Health Research”. This collaboration was the first of its kind in the history of NICHD. JNMC from India, has the unique distinction of being selected as one of the original ten sites in the network. Under the aegis of the Global Network project, various research protocols have been developed, the results of which have global impact on the health of women and children. This commendable work has attracted many dignitaries to visit the Research Unit. The US Secretary of Health Kathleen Sebelius visited the JNMC on 15th January 2012 and congratulated Dr. Prabhakar Kore and his team for their outstanding achievements in Women’s and Children’s Health Research.
